Do you serve your homemade bread with a pitchfork?
So here we are...day 2, week 2 of school. I homeschool my kids and I work outside the home part time. I'm not on medication, but I'm sure I should be. As it is, I live on Rockstar Rehab, Monster Lo carb and Diet Coke to get through the days. Melatonin and Sleepy Time Tea are the go-tos to try to turn off the ol' brain at night. Yeah, it doesn't work. It just perpetuates a vicious cycle. But, hey, I could be strung out on diet pills and valium, so I digress.
I use online classes mixed with book work and I actually teach some lessons. The days I am working we talk about he lessons they did that day and anything they are not "getting" we cover on days I'm not working. It's not perfect, but it works for us. Yes, I am stressed. Yes, I wonder if I am giving them the best education. Yes, I want to quit work everyday. Unfortunately, the mail carrier doesn't want to quit delivering bills to my house.
I am amazed at the groups online with these super mom types that have their stuff together! They have 6 kids that they are homeschooling at once in advanced subjects and they still have a sparkling house, not a hair out of place and make homemade bread from The Pioneer Woman's recipe everyday! They are usually super sweet and modest about their awesomeness just enough to make you feel even more like you don't have a clue and remember that maybe you didn't brush your hair today. (wait, did I?)
Then there are the homeschool Nazis. No offence to Nazis intended, but some of these women are almost militant! Especially when it comes to Common Core. Sweet as pie Suzie Homeschooler turns into a blood thirsty Psycho Mama at the mention of Common Core. Common Core is the initiative to align the school systems curriculums on a national level. It sounds like a great idea in theory. I feel that there are certain things that all students should learn. The basics of reading, writing and math. But like most things instituted by the government, it may not turn out to be what they say, and I am still not sure which side of the fence I stand on.
Just making the statement that I am not sure if I support it or not at this point has brought about such a fierce reaction in some of the online homeschool groups that I expect a mob of women bearing homemade bread AND pitchforks and torches at my door any second. Online homeschool groups and forums are full of great people that are very much supportive of differing opinions and ideas and can offer wonderful resources. However, there are A LOT of people who will readily inform you that you are brainwashed, mention communism and socialism, if you even hint that you might support the Common Core Initiative.
What I don't get is that if you're homeschooling, you don't have to follow Common Core standards. You can teach your children the things you feel they should know. So why get so angry about what children are being taught in public school? It makes me wonder if these people who are so vocal and violently oppose Common core are living in a 2 room cabin in the Ozark's with a cache of guns in an underground bunker and would oppose anything the federal government supported. --By the way, I totally support gun ownership rights people!
I just fell like we all get so caught up in political differences that we forget the real issue at hand. Don't we all want what's best for our kids? Doesn't every parent want to give their kids the very best education possible? I think the answer to that question is a resounding YES!
THAT is the Common Core we should ALL be supporting.
If your interested, read for yourself about Common Core. Sites that support and oppose. Make an INFORMED decision.
