Are You Ready For Some Football????
Football in the South. Particularly SEC football in the South. I have grown to love it. This didn't happen over night. I wasn't raised in a football household. My dad wasn't a sports guy at all. Since I had no one around that was a sports fan, I never knew what I was missing. I also never learned the rules of the game. That makes it kinda hard to get into when you have no idea what 2nd & 5 at the 20 even means. Because I didn't understand the game, I couldn't enjoy it. I was always put off by those loud, obnoxious, trash talking female sports fans. I was so thankful that I was above such behavior.
My husband LOVES football. One of his many passions, but I would say the one he loves the most. It has taken years of being married to a screaming, jumping, fist pumping, hat throwing, cursing man for me to learn to love it, too. But it wasn't easy.
I finally started asking questions as I was forced to sit through Saturday and Sunday afternoon games that made no sense to me. I learned what "downs" are and what "offsides" means and about how the ground can't cause a fumble. The more I paid attention and asked questions, the more I understood and found myself able to tolerate the sport.
Eventually, I found out that I knew quite a lot and was able to follow the game pretty well on my own, and I have even found myself explaining football to a couple female friends that didn't have a clue what a field goal or a turnover actually are.
Now, when we feel that cool breeze in the air...Its time for some FOOTBALL and all that it implies. Tailgating food! Barbecued and smoked meats, hot dogs, chicken wings, buffalo chicken dip, deviled eggs, macaroni salad, baked beans, something with pumpkin since it is fall and potato salad just to name a few. You tie all that together with a really great cocktail ( if you are a drinker, and there are LOTS on non-alcoholic cocktails out there if your not) and you got yourself a party!
As a matter of fact, This past weekend was what is lovingly called "The Worlds Biggest Outdoor Cocktail Party", otherwise known as the Florida VS Georgia SEC football game. Beautiful cool weather and a terrible game outcome for us loyal FL Gator fans. However, I showed my spirit with my shirt, hat, jewelry, beads and my socks!!! Then I sat and ate a lot of delicious food, yelled at the Refs who have no idea how to call a game, and jumped up and down a few times and definitely wanted to tell the GA fans at the gathering to stuff it and shut up.
And then it hit me! I suddenly realized that I have become that loud mouthed obnoxious female football fan that I always hated. Why did I judge those women? They are AWESOME!!! Aside from the heartbreaking loss to the Dawgs, it was a beautiful day with great food and friends. And isn't that really what its all about? Yeah, sure it is.
